Chicken production in Guimaras posted an increase in the first quarter of 2025
Chicken production in Guimaras (live weight) rose by 7.05 percent, increasing from 503.05 metric tons in the first quarter of 2024 to 538.53 metric tons in the first quarter of 2025. Similarly, chicken egg production improved by 10.22 percent, from 232.66 metric tons to 256.44 metric tons.
In contrast, duck production (live weight) experienced a sharp decline of 36.15 percent, dropping from 11.12 metric tons in the first quarter of 2024 to just 7.10 metric tons in the same period of the current year. Additionally, duck egg production also declined by 9.09 percent, from 3.96 metric tons in Q1 2024 to 3.60 metric tons in Q1 2025.
In the first quarter of the year, the number of chickens processed in poultry dressing plants in Guimaras was estimated at 469,296 birds, marking a 4.03 percent increase from the 451,108 birds recorded in the same period last year.
Meanwhile, the number of ducks processed in poultry dressing plants in the province was estimated at 3,736 birds, reflecting a 4.21 percent decrease, or a reduction of 176 birds compared to the same quarter last year. See Figure 2.
Chicken egg production in the first quarter of 2024 was estimated at 256.44 metric tons, or a 10.22 percent increase from the recorded 232.66 metric tons in the first quarter of 2024. See Figure 3.
Moreover, duck egg production in Guimaras declined in the first three months of the year, reaching 3.60 metric tons or a 9.09 percent decrease from the 3.96 metric tons recorded in the same period in the previous year. See Figure 4.
Province of Iloilo leads in total Chicken inventory as of 01 April 2025
As of 01 April 2025, the total chicken inventory in Western Visayas was recorded at 12,930,279 birds, with Guimaras contributing 4.2 percent to the regional total. This places the province behind its regional counterparts, with Iloilo accounting for the largest share at 54.9 percent, followed by Capiz (18.1%), Aklan (15.2%), and Antique (7.6%).
By chicken type, Guimaras registered consistently low proportions across most categories. In broiler chicken inventory, the province contributed a mere 0.1 percent of the total 3,404,587 birds, significantly trailing the shares of Iloilo (52.1%), Aklan (26.6%), and Capiz (21.1%). A similarly limited presence was observed in layer chicken inventory, where Guimaras accounted for only 3.0 percent of the 1,125,951 birds. This contrasts with Iloilo’s 42.0 percent, Capiz’s 31.4 percent, and Antique’s 12.9 percent shares.
Notably, Guimaras recorded its highest share in the native or improved chicken category, contributing 6.1 percent of the total 8,268,236 birds. Despite this, the province remained far behind Iloilo (58.4%), Capiz (15.0%), and Aklan (11.2%).
In terms of gamefowl inventory, Guimaras accounted for 2.8 percent of the 131,505 birds, with most of the stocks held in Antique (41.0%), Capiz (24.9%), and Iloilo (22.2%). See Figure 5.
Iloilo and Capiz lead in Duck inventory as of 01 April 2025
Western Visayas’ Duck inventory as of 01 April 2025 was at 690,040 birds. The provinces of Iloilo and Capiz were the top contributors to the region’s inventory, accounting for 45.4 percent and 24.5 percent, respectively. (Figure 6)
Meanwhile, Guimaras was the least contributor with 2.6 percent share, or 17,917 birds.
TECHNICAL NOTES
Poultry- A collective term for all domesticated avian for the purpose of food consumption or, the carcasses of such avian are processed for human consumption.
Slaughterhouse/ Poultry Dressing Plant- The premises that are approved and registered by a controlling authority in which food animals are slaughtered/dressed for human consumption.
Volume of Production- The number of tended/raised animals disposed for slaughter/dressing including animals shipped-out for slaughter/dressing (in “head/bird” and in “liveweight equivalent”).
Animal Inventory-The actual number of animals (in head/bird) present in the farm as of a specific reference date regardless of ownership.
Broiler- Strains of foreign breeds of chicken, especially raised for meat purposes only.
Layer- Foreign strain chicken regardless of age, raised mainly for egg production.
Native/Improved Chicken- A common backyard fowl that is a mixture of native breeds and foreign breeds which includes Banaba, Bolinao, Kabir, Bantam, Paraoakan, and Heritage Chicken.
