Western Visayas' headline inflation was 4.8 percent in August 2024, similar to the rate recorded
in July 2024. The regional average inflation rate from January to August 2024 is
3.8 percent. In August 2023, the inflation rate was higher at 6.1 percent.
Two of the four livestock animal types in Western Visayas recorded decreases in
production during the second quarter of 2024 compared with the same quarter last
year. Hog production, estimated at 24,391 metric tons for the second quarter of 2024,
declined by 42.0 percent against the production of 42,026 metric tons in the
second quarter of 2023. Similarly, Goat production decreased by 17.6 percent, from
1,681 metric tons in 2023 to 1,385 metric tons in 2024
The total fisheries production of Western Visayas in the second quarter of 2024 was
estimated at 79,902 metric tons. The production decreased by 14.9 percent or about
13,974 metric tons less from the same quarter of 2023’s reported volume of
production. The decrease was attributed to the aquaculture, marine municipal, and
inland municipal fisheries subsectors with 21.6 percent, 21.4 percent and 25.7 percent
drop, respectively. Conversely, commercial fisheries increased by 14.6 percent.
The total corn production of Western Visayas, estimated at 25,409 metric tons for
the second quarter of 2024 declined by 26.6 percent against the total production of
34,640 metric tons in the second quarter of 2023. The region’s total area harvested
for corn decreased by 27.7 percent from 14,576 hectares in the previous year of
the same quarter to 10,533 hectares in the current period
The total palay production of Western Visayas in the second quarter of 2024 was
estimated at 82,819 metric tons. It decreased by 36.0 percent or more than
one-third of the production in the same quarter of 2023. Similarly, the region’s total
area harvested in the current period declined by 31.8 percent, registering
28,546 hectares from 41,833 hectares in the second quarter of 2023.
Western Visayas' headline inflation decreased to 4.8 percent in July 2024, from
4.9 percent in June 2024. The regional average inflation rate from January to July 2024 is
3.7 percent. In July 2023, the inflation rate was higher at 5.8 percent.
In April 2024, the labor force participation rate
(LFPR) in Western Visayas was 62.4 percent
which accounted for 3.547 million of the 5.685
million persons who were 15 years old and
over (Table 1). This recorded a 0.5 percentage
point increase from 61.9 percent of the
reported LFPR in January 2024 and 3.3
percentage point decrease from 65.7 percent
recorded in April 2023
Western Visayas' headline inflation increased further to 4.9 percent in June 2024, from
4.3 percent in May 2024. The regional average inflation rate from January to June 2024 is
3.5 percent. In June 2023, the inflation rate was higher at 6.8 percent.

Hog production declined in 2023
Among the four livestock animal types in Western Visayas, only Hog production
recorded a decrease in 2023, estimated at 158,471 metric tons with a 22.7 percent
decline from 205,040 metric tons in 2022.
