Guimaras’ palay production declined by 1.76 percent in 2024

The total palay production in Guimaras for 2024 was estimated at 53,049.50 metric tons, reflecting a decrease of 1.76 percent compared to the 54,000.00 metric tons recorded in 2023. Similarly, the total area harvested declined by 2.15 percent, registering 18,817.00 hectares in 2024 compared to 19,230.00 hectares in 2023. (Table 1)

In 2024, about 37,815.50 metric tons of the provincial total yield came from rainfed harvest, with a 1.27 percent increment against the production in 2023. Meanwhile, irrigated palay yield at 15,234.00 metric tons showed an 8.54 percent drop from the recorded 16,657.00 metric tons in 2023. See Figure 1.

By ecosystem, harvested areas for irrigated and rainfed palay decreased by 4.65 percent and 1.36 percent, respectively, in 2024, or 215.00 hectares and 198.00 hectares less than in 2023.

Iloilo leads Western Visayas’ palay production in 2024

Among the provinces in the region, Iloilo shared 43.95 percent of the total palay produced in 2024, followed by Negros Occidental at 22.62 percent, Capiz at 16.44 percent, Antique at 10.05 percent, Aklan at 4.14 percent, and Guimaras with the least share of 2.80 percent.

Iloilo contributed the largest area harvested for palay in 2024

Of the 571,971.15 total areas harvested for palay in Western Visayas in 2024, Iloilo had the highest contribution at 44.7 percent share, followed by Negros Occidental, Capiz, and Antique with 20.4 percent, 17.2 percent, and 9.7 percent shares, respectively. Aklan and Guimaras, however, recorded lesser contributions at 4.9 percent and 3.3 percent shares, respectively.

Furthermore, in 2024, the area harvested for palay decreased, leading to an overall decline in the regional area harvested for palay by 14.16 percent. Iloilo had a reduction of 8.39 percentage points.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

Production- refers to the quantity produced and actually harvested of crop during the reference period. Estimates were taken from the Palay Production Survey. 

Area harvested- refers to the total area harvested to palay during the reference quarter. It may be less than or equal to the total area planted to palay. 

Area planted – refers to actual physical area planted. 

Irrigated- refers to area with irrigation facilities supplying water through artificial means like gravity, force/power, pump, etc. 

Rainfed- refers to area which has dikes that retain water and is solely dependent upon rainfall for its water supply.
