All livestock animal types in Guimaras experienced a decline in production in 2024

Livestock production in Guimaras declined across four major animal types in 2024 compared to 2023. Hog production saw the most significant drop, plunging by 51.39 percent from 5,716.34 metric tons in 2023 to 2,778.60 metric tons in 2024.

Cattle production also suffered a sharp decline of 31.93 percent, falling from 894.20 metric tons in 2023 to 608.68 metric tons in 2024.

Similarly, goat production decreased by 8.67 percent, reaching 145.03 metric tons, while carabao production recorded a slight dip of 0.36 percent, from 199.91 metric tons in 2023 to 199.18 metric tons in 2024. (Table 1)

Lesser livestock animal types in Guimaras slaughtered in slaughterhouses in 2024

In 2024, 36,279 Hog heads were slaughtered in slaughterhouses in Guimaras with a decrease of 51.00 percent or a difference of 37,761 heads from last year. (Figure 1)

The number of slaughtered cattle in Guimaras also dropped by 23.10 percent in 2024, decreasing from 5,077 heads in 2023 to 3,904 heads in 2024. (Figure 2)

Furthermore, the number of carabaos slaughtered in slaughterhouses decreased by 74 heads, or 9.14 percent, in 2024, compared to the 810 heads recorded in 2023. (Figure 3)

Meanwhile, the number of goats slaughtered in slaughterhouses in Guimaras recorded a decline of 4.23 percent or a reduction of 420 goat heads from the 9,921 heads recorded in 2023. (Figure 4)

Negros Occidental and Iloilo contributed more than half to the region’s Livestock inventory

Carabao inventory in Western Visayas as of January 1,2025 was recorded at 17,507 heads, with Negros Occidental sharing more than half or 54.4 percent, and Iloilo sharing 23.1 percent. Meanwhile, Guimaras recorded 1.1 percent share.

Cattle inventory was estimated at 18,594 heads of which 5,027 heads or 27.0 percent were from Negros Occidental. This was followed by Iloilo and Antique with 4,893 heads and 3,678 heads, or 26.3 percent and 19.8 percent share, respectively. The least was recorded in Guimaras with 3.3 percent share or 609 cattle heads.

Moreover, Goat Inventory was estimated at 5,676 heads during the same reference period. Negros Occidental accounted for 47.2 percent of the Goat inventory in Western Visayas. This was followed by Iloilo with 1,887 heads at 33.2 percent. Guimaras recorded 145 goat heads at 2.6 percent share.

In the same period, Western Visayas registered the Hog inventory at 100,178 heads, with the share of Negros Occidental at 44.5 percent or 44,582 heads. Meanwhile, Iloilo and Antique accounted for 23.8 percent and 14.1 percent, respectively. The province of Guimaras posted 2.8 percent share or 2,779 hog heads. (Figure 4)

TECHNICAL NOTES

Livestock-Farm animals are kept or raised for consumption and work. For purposes of census and surveys, livestock covers only those that are tended and raised by household and establishments.

Slaughterhouse/ Poultry Dressing Plant-The premises that are approved and registered by a controlling authority in which food animals are slaughtered/dressed for human consumption.

Volume of Production-The number of tended/raised animals disposed for slaughter/ dressing including animals shipped-out for slaughter/dressing (in “head/bird” and in “liveweight equivalent”)

Animal Inventory-The actual number of animals (in head/bird) present in the farm as of a specific reference date regardless of ownership.
