On June 15, 2024, the Philippine Statistics Authority – Antique (PSA Antique), in celebrating the annual Environment Month, took part in highlighting the issue of marine pollution and promoting ocean conservation through a coastal clean-up in one of the natural gems of municipality of San Jose de Buenavista, Antique – the Marine Protected Area (MPA) in Barangay Funda-Dalipe where the Pawikan (marine turtle) Center is also located.
Together with Barangay Funda-Dalipe officials and other volunteers, PSA Antique personnel combed the entire length of Taringting coastline to find and gather all forms of marine pollutants - from plastic food containers and straws to discarded clothing, fish nets and diapers. More than 10 sacks of these trash were gathered by the group and brought to the recycling facility for further sorting and disposal.
The coastal clean-up activity is one of the regular social responsibility activities of PSA Antique being conducted at least every quarter in partnership with local communities with the aim of making a big difference through small action against a massive problem of plastic and other waste pollution affecting the marine ecosystem and the communities relying on them for their livelihood and wellbeing as well as to encourage beach tourism.
