Guimaras’ palay production rises by 34.67 percent in Q4 2024

The total palay production in Guimaras was estimated at 31,528 metric tons for Q4 2024, reflecting an increase of 34.67 percent compared to the 23,411 metric tons recorded in Q4 2023. Similarly, the total area harvested rose to 26.52 percent, registering 10,645 hectares in Q4 2024 compared to 8,414 hectares in the same quarter of 2023.See Table 1

In Q4 2024, about 23,328 metric tons of the provincial total yield came from rainfed harvest, with a 37.55 percent increment against the production in Q4 2023. Meanwhile, irrigated palay yield at 8,200 metric tons showed a 27.11 percent increase from the recorded 6,451 metric tons in Q4 2023. See Figure 1.

Area Harvested by Type of Ecosystem

By ecosystem, harvested areas for irrigated and rainfed palay increased by 28.09 percent and 20.81 percent, respectively, in Q4 2024 or 379 hectares and 1,852 hectares more than in Q4 2023.

Iloilo tops Western Visayas’ palay production in the fourth quarter of 2024

Iloilo shared the highest production of palay at 45.24 percent among the provinces in the region. This was followed by Negros Occidental at 24.71 percent, Capiz at 12.82 percent, Antique at 8.33 percent, Aklan at 5.06 percent, and Guimaras with the least share at 3.85 percent.

Iloilo contributes the largest area harvested to palay in Q4 2024

The region’s total area harvested to palay expanded by 12.33 percent in the fourth quarter of 2024, in which Iloilo province contributed the largest share of 46.51 percent and a contribution of 2.19 percentage points to the regional increase. This was followed by Negros Occidental and Capiz, with shares of 22.10 percent and 13.28 percent, respectively, and contributions of 3.37 and 7.01 percentage points to the regional rise in the area harvested to palay.

Antique, Aklan, and Guimaras had smaller shares of 8.50 percent, 5.22 percent, and 4.40 percent, respectively, of the total palay area harvested in the fourth quarter of 2024.

Furthermore, only Antique contributed negatively at 1.70 percentage points to the regional increase of palay harvested area.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

Production- refers to the quantity produced and actual harvested to crop during the reference period. Estimates were taken from the Palay Production Survey.

Area harvested- refers to the total area harvested to palay during the reference quarter. It may be less than or equal to the total area planted to palay.

Area planted – refers to actual physical area planted.

Irrigated- refers to area with irrigation facilities supplying water through artificial means like gravity, force/power, pump, etc.

Rainfed- refers to area which has dikes that retain water and is solely dependent upon rainfall for its water supply.
