Guimaras’ corn production up by 17.32 percent in the first quarter of 2025
The total corn production in Guimaras for the first quarter of 2025 was estimated at 217.05 metric tons, reflecting an increase of 17.32 percent compared to the 185 metric tons recorded in the first quarter of 2024. Likewise, the total area harvested during the period was 125 hectares, a 31.58 percent increase compared to the 95 hectares recorded in the first quarter of 2024. See Table 1.
Yellow corn yield improves by 17.32% in Q1 2025
In the first quarter of 2025, corn production in Guimaras showed a mixed trend across corn types. White corn production recorded a slight decline of 1.19 percent, decreasing from 80 metric tons in Q1 2024 to 79.05 metric tons in Q1 2025. In contrast, yellow corn production significantly increased by 31.43 percent, rising from 105 metric tons to 138 metric tons over the same period. See Figure 1.
White and yellow corn area harvested increased in first quarter of 2025
A total of 125 hectares of corn were harvested in Guimaras during the first quarter of 2025, showing significant increases in both the white and the yellow corn areas compared to the same period in 2024.
The area harvested for white corn expanded to 60 hectares, marking a 20.00 percent increase from the 50 hectares recorded in the first quarter of 2024. Meanwhile, yellow corn registered a 44.44 percent increase, with harvested area rising from 45 hectares to 65 hectares in the same period.
Corn Production in Western Visayas declines in the first quarter of 2025
In the first quarter of 2025, total corn production in Western Visayas declined by 3.88 percent, decreasing from 16,388 metric tons in Q1 2024 to 15,752 metric tons. Iloilo remained the top producer in the region, contributing 62.06 percent of the total output, although its production slightly decreased by 1.18 percent, resulting in a 0.71 percentage point drop in its contribution. Capiz, the second-largest producer, experienced a more notable decline of 9.05 percent, lowering its share to 33.6 percent and contributing a negative 3.22 percentage points to the overall regional change.
Among the provinces, Guimaras recorded the highest growth in corn production, increasing by 31.58 percent compared to the previous year. Despite its relatively small overall share of 0.8 percent, this growth added 0.18 percentage points to the region’s total. Antique also posted a modest increase of 0.91 percent, with a minimal positive contribution of 0.02 percentage points. On the other hand, Aklan experienced the sharpest decline at 19.26 percent, reducing its share to 0.7 percent and contributing a negative 0.16 percentage point change. Overall, while some provinces showed improvement, the decreases in major producers such as Iloilo and Capiz outweighed the gains, resulting in a net decline in regional corn production.
Iloilo leads corn production in the first quarter of 2025
In the first quarter of 2025, Iloilo emerged as the top producer of corn in Western 3 Visayas, contributing 62.95 percent to the region’s total output. It was followed by Capiz with 33.83 percent and Antique with a modest share of 2.57 percent. Meanwhile, Aklan and Guimaras posted minimal contributions, accounting for only 0.37 percent and 0.28 percent, respectively. See Figure 3.
DEFINITION OF TERMS
Production – refers to the quantity produced and actually harvested of crop during the reference period. Estimates were taken from the Corn Production Survey.
Area harvested – refers to the total area harvested to corn during the reference quarter. It may be less than or equal to the total area planted to corn.
Area planted – refers to actual physical area planted. White corn – type of corn used primarily for human consumption.
Yellow corn – type of corn used generally as feed grains. It includes all types of corn other than white.
