Guimaras’ volume of marine municipal fisheries yield increase by 15.37%
Marine fisheries volume of production in Guimaras recorded 3,546.09 metric tons in 2024 which is 15.37 percent higher than the 3,073.60 recorded in 2023. Figure 1
Fimbriated sardines leads marine municipal fisheries production in 2024
The top five species caught in marine municipal waters in 2024 were fimbriated sardines (tunsoy), anchovies (dilis), blue crab (alimasag), snapper (maya-maya) and slipmouth (sapsap).
Fimbriated sardines noted the highest volume of production at 1,092.61 metric tons, which increased by 297.24 percent from the 275.05 metric tons output in 2023.
Anchovies production accounted 498.93 metric tons which contributed 30.81 percent of the total marine municipal fisheries production in the province. Its production massively rose by 70.38 percent compared to its level in 2023.
Production of blue crab was estimated at 287.13 metric tons which increased by 65.01 percent in 2024, while snapper production increased by 88.60 percent from the 81.74 metric tons output in 2023 to 154.16 metric tons in 2024. Meanwhile, slipmouth recorded 140.23 metric tons output or -12.75 percent lower than the 160.73 production 2023. Table 1
In terms of percentage distribution, among species of marine municipal fishes in the province, fimbriated sardines (tunsoy) had the highest contribution at 30.81 percent, followed by Anchovies (dilis) at 14.07 percent, and blue crab (alimasag) at 8.10 percent.
Conversely, caesio (dalagang-bukid), frigate tuna (tulingan), indo-pacific mackerel (hasa hasa) shared the least in production at 0.24 percent, 0.17 percent and 0.08 percent, respectively.
Other marine municipal fishes contributed 14.47 percent in the overall provincial production. However, there were no records of bigeye tuna (tambakol), eastern little tuna (bonito), skipjack (gulyasan), and yellowfin tuna in the province. Figure 2
Marine municipal fisheries’ production value declines by 13 percent
Marine fisheries value of production in Guimaras recorded an estimated 417.42 million in 2024, or 13 percent lower than the estimated 479.79 million pesos recorded in 2023.
Fimbriated sardines dominated marine municipal fish production value in 2024
In terms of percentage distribution of production values for 2024, among species of marine municipal fishes in th province, fimbriated sardines(tunsoy) had the highest contribution at 20.60 percent, followed by blue crab (alimasag) at 10.62 percent and slipmouth (sapsap) at 9.74 percent. Figure 4
Conversely, caesio (dalagang-bukid), frigate tuna (tulingan), indo-pacific mackerel (hasa hasa), shared the least in production at 0.33 percent, 0.28 percent and 0.09 percent, respectively.
Other marine municipal fishes contributed 16.46 percent in the overall provincial production value.
Fimbriated sardines tops marine municipal fisheries value of production
Fimbriated sardines (tunsoy) was the top contributor to the province’s value of production for the marine municipal fishing, chipping in 20.60 percent, followed by blue crab (alimasag) with 10.62% contribution, snapper (maya-maya) with 9.74 percent share, anchovies (dilis) with 7.75 percent cut, and slipmouth (sapsap) with 4.90 percent input.
Fimbriated sardines had an estimated 85.98 million pesos yield value, translating to 311.20 percent increment from the estimated 20.91 million pesos in 2023.
Blue crab production valued at 44.34 million pesos, shared 10.62 pecent to the total marine municipal fisheries production of the province. Its production value massively increased by 16.67 percent compared to its production worth in 2023.
Production value of Snapper was estimated at 40.67 million pesos, recorded an increment of 96.89 percent in 2024. Anchovies value of production increased by 45.06 percent from the estimated 22.30 million pesos worth in 2023. Meanwhile, grouper accounted 26.18 million pesos was 55.90 percent lower than the 59.35 million pesos production value in 2023.
DEFINITION OF TERMS
Fisheries - all activities relating to the act or business of fishing, culturing, preserving, processing, marketing, developing, conserving and managing aquatic resources and the fishery areas including the privilege to fish or take aquatic resources thereof (RA 8550).
Fisheries Sector - the sector engaged in the production, growing. harvesting, processing, marketing, developing, conserving and managing aquatic resources and fishing areas.
Fishing Grounds - areas in any body of water where fish and other aquatic resources congregate and become the target of capture.
Inland Municipal Fishing - the catching of fish, crustaceans, mollusks and all other aquatic animals and plants in inland water like lakes, rivers, dams, marshes, etc. using simple gears and fishing boats some of which are non-motorized with a capacity of three gross tons or less; or fishing not requiring the use of fishing boats.
Landing Center - a place where the fish catch and other aquatic products are unloaded and traded.
Municipal Fishing - covers fishing operation carried out with or without the use of a boat weighing three gross tons or less.
