23 October 2024 – BACOLOD CITY, NEGROS OOCIDENTAL. The Philippine Statistics Authority - Negros Occidental Provincial Statistical Office spearheads the 28^th Philippine Statistics Quiz (PSQ) – The Search for the Country’s Young Statistics Whizzes – Provincial Eliminations on October 23, 2024 at the Auditorium of Colegio San Agustin – Bacolod, Bacolod City, Negros Occidental. PSQ is an annual contest that aims to assess the proficiency and competencies of freshman college students in the field of statistics. 21 college freshmen from seven colleges and universities in the province competed in the three tightly contested rounds with each round having ten questions. Among the participants are the students from Binalbagan Catholic College (BCC), Carlos Hilado Memorial State University (CHMSU), Colegio San Agustin – Bacolod (CSA-B), State University of Northern Negros (SUNN), Technological University of the Philippines – Visayas (TUP-V), University of Negros Occidental – Recoletos (UNO-R), and University of St. La Salle (USLS).

Resh S. Garcia, a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering student of the Technological University of the Philippines - Visayas topped the quiz and was awarded as First Placer for this year's PSQ. He received a specially designed plaque of recognition and cash prize of Php 5,000.00 together with his coach Engr. Kevin Claveras who also received a cash prize worth PhP 3,000.00. While Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology student of Colegio San Agustin - Bacolod Charles Lawrence Benares and Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering student of Carlos Hilado Memorial State University Chrysler Anthon Jayme earned the second and third places and received a specially designed plaques of recognition and cash prizes of Php 3,000.00 and PhP 2,000.00 respectively. CSA-B Coach Mr. Eduardo Jr. M. Bacodio, MAED received a cash prize of PhP 3,000.00 while Engr. Romeo V. Desabella, coach from CHMSU received PhP 1,000.00. Fourth Placer was Mariz Ashley Salavante, Bachelor of Science in Accountancy student from the University of St. La Salle and Fifth Placer was also a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the Technological University of the Philippines - Visayas in the person of Rodjean Borrero. Both fourth and fifth placers receive a cash prize of PhP 1,000.00 and their coaches Mr. Chard Aye R. Alova, PhD from USLS and Engr. Kevin Claveras of TUP-V received PhP 500.00 each. All participants as well as their respective coaches were given a Certificate of Participation.

The top 3 finalists are to represent the Province of Negros Occidental in the 28th Philippine Statistics Quiz Regional Eliminations to be held on November 8, 2024 in Iloilo City. Regional Placers will advance to the National Finals and will represent the Western Visayas Region.


Among the Board of Judges during the PSQ were Mr. Rey Palacios from St. Joseph School – La Salle, Ms. Diane Matess D. Briones from Doña Montserrat Lopez Memorial High School in Silay City, and were chaired by Ms. Jessamine Calma, PhD from Negros Occidental High School. Ms. Rochelle Sacudit from the Philippine Statistics Authority – Negros Occidental Provincial Statistical Office facilitated the quiz proper and served as the Quiz Master.

Furthermore, Mr. Randdie P. Cuelo, PhD, Vice President for Academic Affairs of Colegio San Agustin – Bacolod graced the event despite the typhoon and cancellation of work and classes to welcome and give an inspirational message to the contestant. Ms. Diesah S. Biaoco, Supervising Statistical Specialist and Mr. Jerome C. Cadayona, Senior Statistical Specialist, from PSA extended their gratitude to all the participating schools for their unending support and participation in the annual PSQ.
