1. Guimaras Food Inflation 

The food inflation rate of Guimaras province increased to 4.8 percent in December 2024 from 2.4 percent in November 2024, bringing the provincial average food inflation from January 2024 to December 2024 to 7.9 percent. The food inflation rate for December 2023 was at 7.3 percent. (Figure 1).

1.1 Main Drivers to the uptrend of Food Inflation 

The acceleration of food inflation in December 2024 was primarily influenced by the monthly price change on Vegetables, tubers, plantains, cooking bananas and pulses, with 14.2 percent inflation from 0.0 percent in the previous month, accounting for a 48.0 percent share of the trend of December 2024 food inflation. 

Also sharing in the uptrend of food inflation were the fast price movements in Meat and other parts of slaughtered land animals with 5.3 percent from 1.5 percent in November 2024 with a 23.4 percent share of December 2024 food inflation. 

Likewise, Fruits and nuts posted -3.1 percent inflation, faster against the -11.1 percent inflation recorded in the previous month.

Other commodities which showed an increase in food inflation rates in December from November 2024 were: 

a) Fish and other seafood, -7.1 percent from -8.2 percent; and 

b) Oils and fats, -1.1 percent from -1.3 percent. 

In contrast, the following were the food items with slower inflation in December against November 2024: 

a) Cereals and cereal products, 13.6 percent from 14.7 percent; 

b) Milk, other dairy products and eggs, 3.8 percent from 4.0 percent; and 

c) Sugar, confectionery and desserts, -5.8 percent from -5.5 percent.

1.2 Main Contributors to Food Inflation in December 2024 

The three commodity groups with the highest contribution to the December 2024 overall food inflation were: 

a) Cereals and cereal products, with a 94.9 percent contribution or 4.6 percentage points; 

b) Vegetables, tubers, plantains, cooking bananas and pulses with 18.6 percent contribution or 0.9 percentage point; and 

c) Meat and other parts of slaughtered land animals with 12.7 percent contribution or 0.6 percentage point.

2. Guimaras Core Inflation 

Core food inflation, which excludes selected food items, increased to 3.5 percent in December 2024 from 0.3 percent in the previous month. In December 2023, core food inflation was higher at 3.7 percent. (Table 1)

3. Food Inflation 

Rate for the Bottom 30% Income Households The food inflation rate for Guimaras' bottom 30% income households moved faster to 6.3 percent in December 2024 from 4.5 percent in the previous month. In December 2023, the food inflation for low-income HHs was at 7.1 percent.

The acceleration of food inflation for low-income households in Guimaras in December 2024 was primarily influenced by the faster price change in Vegetables, tubers, plantains, cooking bananas and pulses with 12.0 percent inflation, from -1.3 percent in the previous month accounting for 53.5 percent share to the December 2024 food inflation for low-income households in the province.

Also sharing to the uptrend of food inflation for the bottom 30% income households were the fast price movements in Meat and other parts of slaughtered land animals at 5.0 percent from 0.8 percent in November 2024 with 25.0 percent share to the December 2024 food inflation for low-income households.

Other commodities which showed an increase in food inflation rates for low-income HHs in December from November 2024 were: 

a) Vegetables, tubers, plantains, cooking bananas and pulses, 12.0 percent from -1.3 percent 

b) Fish and other seafood, -4.7 percent from -5.1 percent; and 

c) Oils and fats, -3.4 percent from -3.6 percent, and d) Fruits and nuts, -2.4 percent from -9.8 percent

In contrast, food items with decelerating food inflation rate in December from November 2024 were Cereal and cereal products with 14.8 percent inflation from 15.9 percent; Milk, other dairy products and eggs with 4.0 percent from 4.1 percent; Sugar, confectionery and desserts with -8.1 percent from -7.8 percent; and Ready-made food and other food products n.e.c with 9.1 percent from 9.2 percent inflation.

On the other hand, the top three commodity groups contributing to the December 2024 from November 2024 overall food inflation for low income HHs were the following: 

a) Cereals and cereal products, with a 94.7 percent contribution or 6.0 percentage points; 

b) Vegetables, tubers, plantains, cooking bananas and pulses with 10.7 percent contribution or 0.7 percentage point; and 

c) Meat and other parts of slaughtered land animalswith 6.6 percent contribution or 0.4 percentage point.
