REGISTERED DEATHS IN CAPIZ EXHIBIT A FLUCTUATING TREND

Registered deaths in Capiz exhibited fluctuations throughout the decade, without a consistent upward or downward trend. Initially, a notable decrease occurred from 5,118 in 2014 to 4,519 in 2015. Subsequently, the numbers generally increased and then stabilized between 2016 and 2020, ranging from approximately 4,800 to 5,300. A sharp and substantial surge in registered deaths was observed in 2021, reaching a peak of 6,641, likely a consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic's impact on mortality rates both globally and within Capiz.

Following this peak, the number of registered deaths declined to 5,933 in 2022, suggesting a potential easing of contributing factors. In 2023, a slight increase of 5,749 was recorded, which, while higher than pre-pandemic figures, remained below the 2021 peak. Overall, comparing the start and end of the period, the 2023 figure (5,749) surpasses the 2014 count (5,118), indicating a net increase in registered deaths over the decade despite the intervening fluctuations.

Registered deaths in 2023 showed a decrease compared to the previous year, this is equivalent to a crude death rate (CDR) of approximately 7 persons per thousand population and registering an average of 16 deaths daily.

Across the province, Roxas City, the capital recorded the highest number of deaths both by usual residence and place of occurrence with 21.6 percent and 36.9 percent ratio to the total registered deaths of the province in 2023. (See Figure 2). Other municipalities with highest ratio on the number of deaths recorded by usual residence were Panay (6.6 percent), Dumarao (6.5 percent), Tapaz (6.3 percent), Pontevedra (6.1 percent), Pilar (6.0 percent), Panitan (5.5 percent), and Mambusao (4.8 percent). Other municipalities recorded the least number of deaths during the year.

THE MOST NUMBER OF DEATHS OCCURRED IN MAY

Regarding the monthly distribution of registered deaths in 2023, May recorded the highest number, with 537 deaths, representing 9.3 percent of the annual total. January followed with 516 deaths, accounting for 9.0 percent. September had the lowest number of registered deaths, at 421, or 7.3 percent.(Figure 3) Likewise, the months of April, May, June, July, August, September, October and December fall below the provincial daily index of 100.0. (Table 2)

MORE MEN DIED THAN WOMEN IN 2023

Of the total reported registered deaths in 2023, male registration has accumulated a total of 3,253 or 56.6 percent of the total death registration, while 2,496 were recorded on female death registration or 43.4 percent of the total death registration in the province of Capiz. This translates to a sex ratio of 130 male deaths per every 100 female deaths.

An inverted pyramid with fewer deaths at the younger ages, except for children under one, and progressively increasing as people age. (See Figure 4). There were more male deaths (59.1 percent) compared to female deaths (40.9 percent) occurred at an earlier age (under 1 year old) which may due to inaccessible health facilities and not having pre-natal and post-natal care for the babies and mother. The same observation can be seen across all age groups. This is an indication that women live longer than men.

Moreover, 39.1 percent of recorded deaths were persons in the working group (15 to 64 years old) where male deaths outnumbered (68.2 percent) female deaths (31.8 percent) on this age group. About 65.8 percent of deaths were recorded in the older age group of 60 years old and over. Slightly higher proportion of male deaths (50.7 percent) than male deaths were observed in age group 80 years old and over.
