Guimaras Records 3.65% Increase in Palay Production in Q1 2025

Palay production in Guimaras rose by 3.65 percent in the first quarter of 2025, reaching an estimated 10,084 metric tons—up from 9,729 metric tons recorded during the same period in 2024. This growth was accompanied by a 5.43 percent increase in the total area harvested, which expanded to 4,331 hectares in Q1 2025 from 4,108 hectares in Q1 2024 translating to 223 hectares expansion. See Table 1.

In the first three months of 2025, about 6,091 metric tons of the provincial total yield came from rainfed harvest, with a 3.38 percent increment against the production in the first quarter of 2024. Meanwhile, irrigated palay yield at 3,993 metric tons showed a 4.07 percent increase from the recorded 3,837 metric tons in Q1 2024. See Figure 1.

Area Harvested by Type of Ecosystem

By ecosystem, harvested areas for irrigated and rainfed palay increased by 6.20 percent and 5.09 percent, respectively, in the first quarter of 2025 or 78 hectares and 145 hectares more than in the first quarter of 2024. See Figure 2.

Iloilo tops Western Visayas palay production in the first quarter of 2025

In the first quarter of 2025, palay production in Western Visayas declined by 5.11 percent, dropping from 579,108.91 metric tons in Q1 2024 to 549,512.19 metric tons. The decline was primarily driven by Iloilo, which recorded the largest reduction in output both in absolute and relative terms. Iloilo’s production fell by 12.44 percent, contributing -7.58 percentage points to the regional decrease. Despite this, Iloilo remained the top producer, accounting for 56.21 percent of the total regional output.

On the other hand, Antique exhibited the most significant growth, with production surging by 38.49 percent, contributing a positive 3.80 percentage points to the overall change and holding a 14.41 percent share of total production.

Capiz and Aklan showed contrasting trends. Capiz’s output declined by 8.17 percent, contributing -1.87 percentage points, while Aklan increased its production by 10.10 percent, contributing 0.47 percentage points to the regional total.

Guimaras recorded a modest increase of 3.65 percent, with a minimal contribution of 0.06 percentage points and the smallest share of regional production at 1.84 percent.

Among the provinces in the region, Iloilo contributed the highest share of palay production at 56.21 percent. It was followed by Capiz with 22.11 percent, Antique with 14.41 percent, Aklan with 5.43 percent, and Guimaras, which recorded the smallest share at 1.84 percent. See Figure 3.

Palay Area Harvested in Western Visayas Drops by 8.51% in Q1 2025

The total area of palay harvested in Western Visayas declined by 8.51 percent in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024. Among the provinces, Iloilo recorded the largest share of harvested area at 54.97 percent and contributed 8.84 percentage points to the regional decline. Capiz and Antique followed, accounting for 22.47 percent and 13.37 percent of the total harvested area, with respective contributions of -2.48 and 2.61 percentage points to the overall decrease.

Meanwhile, Aklan and Guimaras had smaller shares, contributing 6.63 percent and 2.55 percent, respectively, of the total palay area harvested in the first quarter of 2025. See Table 3.

DEFINITION OF TERMS 

Production- refers to the quantity produced and actually harvested of crop during the reference period. Estimates were taken from the Palay Production Survey. 

Area harvested- refers to the total area harvested to palay during the reference quarter. It may be less than or equal to the total area planted to palay. 

Area planted – refers to actual physical area planted. 

Irrigated- refers to area with irrigation facilities supplying water through artificial means like gravity, force/power, pump, etc. 

Rainfed- refers to area which has dikes that retain water and is solely dependent upon rainfall for its water supply.
