VOLUME OF PALAY PRODUCTION

Palay Production increases by 12.02 percent in fourth quarter of 2024

Palay production in Aklan was estimated at 41,426 metric tons in the fourth quarter of 2024, marking a 12.02 percent increase from the 36,980 metric tons recorded in the same quarter of the previous year. Palay yield increased by 0.12 metric tons per hectare compared to the same quarter of the previous year, rising from 3.15 to 3.27 metric tons per hectare. (See Figure 1.)

The increase was driven by a 17.29 percent rise in irrigated areas, contributing 24,054 metric tons to the total production. Meanwhile, rainfed areas posted a 5.47 percent increase, with total production reaching 17,372 metric tons.

Irrigated palay production is significantly higher, contributing 58 percent to the total, compared to rainfed palay at 42 percent. (See Figure 2.)

Aklan’s production for the Q4 2024 is only 5.1 percent of the total palay produced in Western Visayas with about 818,569 metric tons, which puts Aklan as 5th highest producer among the six provinces of the region.  (See Figure 3.)

The total area harvested for palay increased by 7.65 percent between Q4 2023 and Q4 2024, rising from 11,753 hectares to 12,652 hectares. Irrigated areas contribute 12.15 percent increase than rainfed areas with 3.04 percent increase. (See Figure 4.)

VOLUME OF CORN PRODUCTION

Corn production declined to 190 metric tons in fourth quarter of 2024

Corn production in Aklan observed a significant drop in the fourth quarter of 2024, with a total production of 190 metric tons, marking a 49.30 percent decrease from 375 metric tons in the same quarter of 2023. (See Figure 6.)

In Q4 2024, Aklan accounted for only 0.4% of the total corn production in Western Visayas with about 45,978 metric tons. This placed the province 6th out of the six provinces in the region, making it the lowest-ranked corn producer during the quarter. (See Figure 5.)

The average corn yield declined from 2.41 to 2.32 metric tons per hectare. (See Figure 6.)

White corn production dropped sharply by 85.27 percent, falling from 178 metric tons in Q4 2023 to just 26 metric tons in Q4 2024. Meanwhile, yellow corn production also saw a decrease of 16.70 percent, from 197 metric tons to 164 metric tons. (See Figure 6.)

Yellow corn production made up the majority of the total output, contributing 86 percent, while white corn accounted for only 14 percent. (See Figure 7.)

AREA HARVESTED OF CORN PRODUCTION

Corn harvest drops to 82 hectares in fourth quarter of 2024

The area harvested for corn in Q4 2024 was estimated at 82 hectares, a 47.4 percent decrease from 156 hectares in Q4 2023. Area harvested for white corn saw a significant decrease of 75.6 percent, while yellow corn experienced a more moderate decline of 12.9 percent. (Figure 8.)

TECHNICAL NOTES

Palay and Corn Production Survey. One of the quarterly agricultural surveys that provides estimates on palay and corn production, area, yield, and other production-related metrics. This data supports policymaking and program development for palay/rice and corn.

Production. Refers to the quantity produced and actually harvested during the reference period. This includes those harvested but damaged, stolen, given away, consumed, given as harvesters’ and threshers’ shares, reserved, etc.

Area Harvested. Refers to the total area from which palay or corn was harvested during the reference period. This area may be less than or equal to the total area planted.

IrrigatedArea with irrigation facilities supplying water through artificial means like gravity, force/power, pump, etc.

Rainfed. Area holds standing water but solely dependent on rainfall for its water supply.

White Corn. A type of corn used primarily for human consumption, regardless of color.

Yellow Corn. A type of corn primarily used as feed grains encompassing all varieties of corn other than white.
