According to the data generated from the Decentralized Vital Statistics System (DVSS) of the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) Guimaras Provincial Statistical Office, the province of Guimaras registered 777 live births in the fourth quarter of 2024. Of these births, 51.48 percent or 400 births were female and 48.52 percent, or 4377 births were male, with a gender gap of 2.96 percent or a sex ratio of 94 males to every 100 females.

In the fourth quarter of 2024, the number of registered live births decreased by 23.90 percent Compared to the same period in 2023. The total number of live births declined from 1,021 in the fourth quarter of 2023 to 777 in the fourth quarter of 2024. Female live births decreased from 537 in Q4 2023 to 400 in Q4 2024, while male live births also decreased from 484 in Q4 2023 to 377 in Q4 2024.

Registered Births by Municipality, Guimaras: Q4 2023 & Q4 2024

In the fourth quarter of 2023, the municipality of Jordan was the leading contributor to the provincial total, accounting for over half of the registered live births with a 76.00 percent share, or 776 births. Buenavista ranked second, contributing 12.34 percent with 126 live births, followed by Nueva Valencia, which recorded 109 births, or 10.68 percent. In contrast, San Lorenzo registered just 7 live births, representing 0.69 percent, while Sibunag had the fewest with only 3 live births, or 0.29 percent.

In the fourth quarter of 2024, the total number of registered live births in Guimaras, based on the usual residence of the mother, reached 777. Jordan recorded the highest number, with 624 registered births, accounting for 80.31 percent of the provincial total. Buenavista followed with 106 births, or 13.64 percent, while Nueva Valencia registered 42 births, representing 5.41 percent. The municipality of San Lorenzo recorded the fewest births, with only 5, or 0.64 percent.

Additionally, no registered births were recorded in the municipality of Sibunag during the fourth quarter of 2024.

In the fourth quarter of 2024, all municipalities in the province of Guimaras experienced a decline in the number of registered live births compared to the fourth quarter of 2023.

Sibunag reported a complete decline, with a 100 percent decrease in registered live births, dropping from 3 births in the fourth quarter of 2023 to zero in the fourth quarter of 2024.

In the fourth quarter of 2023, a total of 1,021 live births were registered, with 52.60 percent female (537 births) and 47.40 percent male (484 births), resulting in a gender gap of 5.19 percent.

Female live births outnumbered male births in the following municipalities: 

• Buenavista, with a gender gap of 4.76 percent; 

• Jordan, with a gender gap of 6.96 percent; 

• San Lorenzo, with a gender gap of 14.29 percent.

Meanwhile, Nueva Valencia was male-dominated, with a gender gap of 4.59 percent. Notably, no female live birth was recorded in Sibunag during the fourth quarter of 2023.

In the fourth quarter of 2024, Guimaras continued to exhibit a trend of female dominance in registered live births, with a gender gap of 2.96 percent. Female live births outnumbered male births in the following municipalities:

• Buenavista, with a gender gap of 16.98 percent, or a sex ratio of 71 males for every 100 females; 

• Nueva Valencia, with a gender gap of 4.76 percent, or 91 males per 100 females; 

• Jordan, with a gender gap of 0.64 percent, translating to a sex ratio of 99 males for every 100 females.

In contrast, in San Lorenzo, male live births outnumbered female live births, with a gender gap of 20 percent, or 150 males per 100 females. Notably, Sibunag reported no registered live births for the quarter.

The registration of births by month in the fourth quarter of 2024 showed that November recorded the highest number, with 143 female births, while October reported the lowest, with only 123 female births. See figure 4.

For male births, October recorded the highest number of registrations, with 134 male live births, while November recorded the fewest, with just 118 male live births.

In the fourth quarter of 2024, the highest number of live births (both sexes) was recorded in November, with 261 registrations, while October had the lowest, with 257 registered live births. See Figure 5.

TECHNICAL NOTES 

Vital Statistics – are derived from information obtained at the time when the occurrences of vital events and their characteristics are inscribed in civil register. Vital acts and events are the birth, death and marriages, and all such events that have something to do with an individual’s entrance and departure from life together with the changes in civil status that may occur to a person during his lifetime. Recording of these events in the civil register is known as a vital or civil registration and the resulting documents are vital records. 

Live Birth – is a complete expulsion or extraction from its mother of a product of conception, irrespective of the duration of the pregnancy, which after such separation, breathes or shows any other evidence of life, such as the beating of heart, pulsation of the umbilical cord has been cut or the placenta is attached, each product of such a birth is considered live born.
