n 2023, the estimated total palay production in Aklan was 84,938.98 metric tons, indicating a 23.88 percent decrease from the 111,580.61 metric tons recorded in 2022. The average yield of palay in 2023 is 2.45 metric tons per hectare, a 15.76 percent drop from the 2.91 metric tons per hectare achieved in the previous year.

Of the total palay produced in 2023, 59.76 percent or 50,760.50 metric tons were harvested from irrigated farms, while 40.24 percent or 34,178.48 metric tons came from rainfed farms. Both types of palay harvests experienced a decrease of 19.80 metric tons and 29.22 metric tons, respectively. The average yield for irrigated palay is 2.84 metric tons per hectare, while 2.03 metric tons per hectare for rainfed palay harvests.

Moreover, the highest palay production in 2023 occurred in the 4th quarter, with 36,979.90 metric tons (a 1.02 percent decrease from 37,362 metric tons in 2022) and an average yield of 3.15 metric tons per hectare. On the other hand, the lowest production was in the 2nd quarter with 7,178.00 (a 45.15 percent drop from 13,086.87 metric tons in 2022) and an average yield of 1.77 metric tons per hectare.

 

 

Palay harvested area

The estimated total area harvested for palay during 2023 was 34,704.00 thousand hectares. This is 9.64 percent smaller than the 38,406.44 thousand hectares area harvested in 2022. 51.50 percent or 17,874.00 thousand hectares of this total area harvested was from irrigated farms, while 48.50 percent or 16,830 thousand hectares came from rainfed farms.

 

 

Corn production increased in 2023

The estimated total area harvested for corn during 2023 was 1,169.70 thousand hectares. This is 3.70 percent smaller than the 1,214.62 thousand hectares area harvested in 2022. 34.69 percent or 405.80 thousand hectares of this total area harvested were white corn, while 65.31 percent or 763.90 thousand hectares were yellow corn.

 

 

 

The production of corn in Aklan experienced a growth of 16.93 percent in 2023. From 2,810.84 metric tons in 2022, it increased to 3,286.62 metric tons during the reference year. The average yield of corn in 2023 is 2.81 metric tons per hectare, which is 21.42 percent higher than the 2.31 metric tons per hectare produced in the previous year.

 

Of the total corn produced in 2023, 28.00 percent or 920.03 metric tons were white corn, while 72.00 percent or 2,366.59 metric tons were yellow corn. White corn harvests experienced a decrease of 1.80 percent, while an increase of 26.29 percent was experienced in yellow corn harvests. For white corn harvests, the average yield was 2.27 metric tons per hectare, while 3.10 metric tons per hectare for rainfed palay harvests.

Moreover, the highest corn production in 2023 was recorded during the 2nd quarter with 1,395.25 metric tons (a 56.17 percent rise from 893.44 metric tons in 2022) and an average yield of
3.04 metric tons per hectare. On the other hand, the lowest production of palay was during the 1st quarter with 236.47 metric tons (a 23.54 percent decrease from 309.28 metric tons in 2022) and an average yield of 1.99 metric tons per hectare.

This special release presents the Palay and Corn production of Aklan in 2023.The annual data includes the estimates of palay/corn production and area harvested for analysis which serves as a basis for policy-making and projects on palay. The data provided in this special release were
taken from the latest available data of the Palay Production Survey (PPS) and Corn Production Survey (CPS) of the Crops Statistics Division, Economic Sector Statistics Service, Sectoral Statistics Office of the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA). This information presented in this
special release was taken from www.openstat.psa.gov.ph.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

Production- refers to the quantity produced and actually harvested of crop during the reference period. Estimates were taken from the Palay Production Survey for palay and Corn Production Survey for corn.

Area harvested- refers to the total area harvested to palay/corn during the reference quarter. It may be less than or equal to the total area planted to palay/corn.

Area planted – refers to actual physical area planted.

Irrigated- refers to area with irrigation facilities supplying water through artificial means like gravity, force/power, pump, etc.

Rainfed- refers to area which has dikes that retain water and is solely dependent upon rainfall for its water supply.

White corn – type of corn used primarily for human consumption.

Yellow corn – type of corn used generally as feed grains. It includes all typesof corn other than white.
