In the province of Aklan, more than half (51.0 percent or 313,737 individuals) of its 615,475 total population were males. Meanwhile, 49 percent or 301,738 individuals were females. This translates to a sex ratio of 104 males per 100 females.

Among the 17 municipalities of Aklan, Madalag and Malay posted the highest sex ratio of 108 males per 100 females. This was follo wed by the municipalities of Nabas and Libacao with 106. Women exhibit higher dependency ratio than men

In the province of Aklan, the 2020 CPH results indicated a dependency ratio of 56, meaning there were 56 dependents for every 100 working-age individuals. The data also revealed a higher dependency ratio among women than men, with 59 female dependents per 100 working-age females, compared to 54 male dependents per 100 working-age males. This suggests that a smaller proportion of women belonged to the working-age group compared to men.

Highest female dependency ratio was registered in the municipality of Malinao with 67 female dependents per 100 working-age females. This was followed by Makato with 64 and the municipalities of Batan, Kalibo, Libacao, and New Washington all posted 63 dependents per 100 working-age females.

On the other hand, Altavas had the lowest dependency ratio among females1 with 52, followed by Balete and Numancia with 54 and 55 dependency ratios among women, respectively.

Majority of single seniors are women

Out of the 199,174 never-married persons aged 10 years and over in the province of Aklan, 89,115 were women, accounting for 45 percent of this population group.

Across different age groups, more men than women were recorded among never-married individuals below 60 years old. However, the trend reversed for seniors aged 60 and above, where women outnumbered men.

Notably, 2,341 never-married seniors (aged 60 and older) were recorded, with women comprising 64.7 percent (1,515 individuals) of this group. This highlights that singlehood in later years is more prevalent among women.

TECHNICAL NOTES

Overview of the 2020 Census of Population and Housing (2020 CPH) in Aklan

The 2020 Census of Population and Housing (2020 CPH) was a nationwide statistical undertaking conducted by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) to gather essential demographic and housing data. With May 1, 2020, as the reference date, the census aimed to provide updated information crucial for policy-making, development planning, and governance at both national and local levels.

In the province of Aklan, the PSA Aklan spearheaded the census enumeration despite challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Field operations commenced in September 2020, adhering to strict health and safety protocols to protect both enumerators and respondents. The data collection process involved a combination of face-to-face interviews, online questionnaires, and telephone interviews to ensure comprehensive coverage while minimizing health risks.

The support of the local government units (LGUs), barangay officials, and community leaders played a crucial role in facilitating the smooth conduct of the census. Public awareness campaigns, including information drives and local announcements, were conducted to encourage participation and emphasize the importance of accurate data collection.

About 912 fieldworkers were deployed by PSA in the Province of Aklan during the nationwide census taking in 2020.

As a result of these efforts, the total population of Aklan was recorded at 615,475 as of May 1, 2020. The census data collected in Aklan provided valuable insights into population distribution, age structure, household composition, and housing characteristics, serving as a foundation for local economic development plans, social welfare programs, and disaster risk reduction initiatives.

The successful implementation of the 2020 CPH in Aklan underscores the province’s commitment to producing reliable and timely statistics, which are vital for evidence-based decision-making and sustainable development.
