Registered deaths declined in 2022

The province of Aklan recorded a total of 4,594 registered deaths in 2022. It went down by about 7.5 percent compared to the 4,967 registered deaths the previous year. On the average, about 13 deaths are registered daily and crude death rate reached 7.5 per 1000 population in 2022, slightly lower than the 8.1 percent in 2021.

Among the 17 municipalities, the highest number of registered deaths by usual residence occurred in Kalibo with 743 deaths or about 16.2 percent of the total deaths in the province. This was followed by municipality of Ibajay and New Washington recording 325 (8.8% share) and 256 (8.6% share) registered deaths, respectively. The combined share of the three municipalities accounted for one-third of the of the total registered deaths. On the other hand, Lezo reported the least number of registered deaths (110 deaths or 2.4%) in 2022.

More deaths in the first month of 2022

Highest recorded number of deaths registered is in the month January with 476 logged deaths
or about 10.4 percent of total deaths in 2022. Followed by month of August and December with 415
and 407 logged deaths, respectively. Meanwhile, least recorded number of deaths fell in months of July
and September with 357 deaths.

Males comprised more than half of registered deaths

Of the recorded 4,594 deaths in 2022, it was revealed that more males died than females comprising 57.5 percent or 2,643 males over 1,951 females or 42.5 percent based on the usual residence of the deceased. This translates to 135 male deaths per 100 females who died in 2022.

Four out of ten deaths were attended by health care provider

Attendant refers to a private physician, public health officer, hospital authority, or any other allied health care provider who provided medical attendance to the deceased at the time of death.

Out of 4,594 registered deaths in usual place of residence, 43.3 percent or 1,991 deaths were attended. Among these, 75.1 percent or 1,495 deaths occurred in attendance of a hospital authority, 288 deaths (14.5 percent) in the presence of a public health officer and 204 deaths (10.5 percent) occurred in the care of private physicians in 2022. Meanwhile, 4 deaths were attended by a non-medical individual.

On the other hand, registered unattended deaths comprised 56% of the total deaths in the Aklan which is equivalent to 2,570 deaths.

 

Three fifths of the total registered deaths occurred at home

Number of Registered Deaths by Site of Occurrence and Place of Occurrence, Aklan: 2022In 2022, 2,848 or 62.4 percent of the total deaths occurred at home while 1,710 or 37.5 percent died in any health facilities. Some (4 or 0.07% share) died in places other than home and health facilities, such as on the street, in public places, on board a vehicle, airplane or vessel while in transit, among others.

About 1% late death registration

Registration of death shall be made in the office of the Civil Registrar of the city/municipality where the death occurred within thirty (30) days from the time of death. (Sec. 5, P.D. 651). In 2022, 99 percent of deaths occurred in usual place of residence is registered on time. This accounts to 4,547 registered death out of the 4,594 total deaths in the province of Aklan.

Kalibo recorded the highest number of fetal deaths

Fetal death refers to the death of a fetus irrespective of the duration of pregnancy prior to complete expulsion or extraction of a product of conception from the mother's womb. In 2022, a total of 38 fetal deaths were reported. By usual residence of the mother, Kalibo had the highest number of fetal deaths with 10 cases or 26.3 percent of the total, followed by Numancia (5 or 13.2% share) and Balete (4 or 10.5% share).

Infant deaths are deaths that occurred before reaching age 1

In Aklan, 95 infant deaths were registered by place of usual residence. Of this number, 49 infant
deaths are accounted for females or about 51.6 percent while 46 infant deaths (48.4%) are of males in
2022.

The municipality of Kalibo posted the highest number of infant deaths (16 or 16.8% share), followed by New Washington (11 or 11.6% share) and Ibajay (9 or 9.5% share). On the contrary, there was no recorded infant deaths in Madalag. Furthermore, all infant deaths in the province are attended by a medical professional.

Highest number of maternal deaths recorded in Nabas

In 2022, a total of 13 women in the province were reported to have died of maternal causes. Four maternal deaths or about 31 percent occurred in the municipality of Nabas. While most maternal deaths are recoded in aged 35-39 years.

The World Health Organization defines a maternal death as "the death of a woman while pregnant or within 42 days of termination of pregnancy, irrespective of the duration and the site of the pregnancy, from any cause related to or aggravated by the pregnancy or its management, but not from accidental or incidental causes."

Explanatory Notes


Data on deaths presented in this release were obtained from the Certificates of Death (Municipal Form No. 103) that were registered at the Office of the City/Municipal Civil Registrars throughout the province and forwarded to the Philippine Statistics Authority. This release shows an overview of the registered deaths that occurred from January to December 2022. Deaths of Filipinos that occurred abroad which were reported to the Philippine Foreign Service Posts are presented in a separate report. The figures shown were not adjusted for under registration.

Death statistics presented are the preliminary results for the province of Aklan, taken from the database of Philippines Statistics Authority. Note that some figures (percentages) are rounded off to complement the analysis.
