Employment Situation in Western Visayas April 2022

Explanatory Notes:

The Labor Force Survey (LFS) is a nationwide survey of households conducted by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) to gather data on the demographic and socio-economic characteristics of the population. The LFS aims to provide a quantitative framework for the preparation of plans and formulation of policies affecting the labor market. Specifically, the survey is designed to provide statistics on levels and trends of employment, unemployment and underemployment for the country, as a whole, and for each of the administrative regions.

Unemployment rate in April 2022 increased to 5.6 percent from 4.7 percent in January 2022

The unemployment rate in Western Visayas in April 2022 was estimated at 5.6 percent. This is lower than the unemployment rate of the same month a year ago reported at 7.5 percent. Moreover, April 2022 unemployment rate is higher than the previous quarter’s (January 2022) unemployment rate estimate of 4.7 percent.

Compared to the national level unemployment rate, Western Visayas’ unemployment rate in April 2022 is 0.1 percentage point lower than the national value of 5.7 percent while 1.9 percentage points lower than in April of 2021.

Labor force participation rate registered at 62.3 percent

Of the estimated 5.56 million population 15 years old and over in Western Visayas for April 2022, 3.46 million or about 62.3 percent are in the labor force. Western Visayas’ labor force participation rate (LFPR) is 1.1 percentage points lower than the national LFPR of 63.4 percent.

About 3.27 million individuals in the labor force are employed in April 2022

In the region, in terms of numbers, about 3.46 million individuals 15 years old and over are in the labor force. Of this, about 3.27 million individuals are employed and about 194 thousand were unemployed. The number of individuals in the labor force decreased by 0.9 percent from the previous quarter’s estimate of 3.50 million individuals. On the other hand, the number of unemployed individuals increased from previous quarter’s estimate of 164 thousand. However, compared to the same month a year ago (April 2021) the number of unemployed individuals decreased from previous year’s estimate of 253 thousand.

Underemployment rate went down to 16.4 percent

The underemployment rate in the region decreased from 17.0 percent in January 2022 to 16.4 percent in April 2022. The underemployment rate decreased by 5.2 percentage points from the same quarter of pervious year (April 2021). In April 2022, there are about 536,168 underemployed individuals. Compared to other regions, Western Visayas ranked the seventh (7 th) highest in underemployment rate. Underemployment rate in the region is 2.4 percentage points higher than the national value underemployment rate.
